Rebound effect
Energy Efficiency and Historic Buildings, How to Improve Energy Efficiency, Published by Historic England in 2018, defines the rebound effect as: ‘A situation where energy demand increases after implementing efficiency measures, due to the perception that overall energy costs have diminished and energy-saving actions can therefore be relaxed.’
This is sometimes associated with the Jevons paradox, named for the economist William Stanley Jevons.
